What should you do with your hair on competition day?
Make sure you read the tips provided below!
Hair Styling is an integral part of creating the perfect look for DanceSport. Just as everyone's body has a unique shape and size, so do their head and facial features. Certain hairstyles will be suitable for some individuals and not for others. Remember, we want to accentuate your particular assets and conceal your not-so-perfect parts. This way, we can create the perfect look for your unique face.
A good hairdresser will be able to study the shape of your head and face to determine what hairstyle would be most suitable for you. Perhaps you have a long forehead that would be better covered with some bangs... maybe your face is very round, and would look better with an asymmetrical hairstyle. In any case, it would be best to consult a Professional to help you create the perfect look.
If you are competing in Vancouver, your best bet would be to go to Kanai Hairstyling in Downtown, Vancouver. Kanai has had years of experience with DanceSport competitors and judges alike, producing magnificent creations for all the top BC dancers, as well as many dancers throughout the World. If you don't have the money to spend on a Professional hairdo for every competition, there are many other ways you can create the perfect look. Study the hairstyles of other dancers in person or on the web. Look at some magazines and take out some books from the library. However you do it, it must be carefully planned. Figure out the exact look and feel that you want to create on the floor, so that you will be confident with your overall presentation.
For DanceSport, not only do you have to consider your own look, but how it compliments the couple. For example, if the lady is much shorter than the man, perhaps you want to create an updo for a slightly taller look. If you are going to a Professional, make sure you describe to them your partner as well. Show them some pictures and give them as much detail as you can about what DanceSport looks like.
For men, it is equally important to make sure that your hair is properly groomed. For ballroom, hair slicked straight back or parted are the accepted styles. The spiked look and more adventurous styles should only be worn on the Latin competition floor. Facial hair should be kept to a minimum and neck hair should be completely shaved.
Most importantly, make sure that you have enough hairspray and gel to ensure that there is no movement in the hair. If you go to a Hairdresser that knows nothing about DanceSport, they usually don't put enough product or pins in your hair. Describe to them or show them just how active your head has to be in DanceSport. There is nothing worse than having your hair fall apart with the first few bars of the Tango or Cha Cha. Use a hairdryer and lots of product to make sure that there are no fly-aways to complete that clean and polished look.
