Just as you've seen for singers and movie stars, makeup can certainly do wonders!.
Make sure your makeup is professional looking and completes your look.
Makeup is also something that is very individual that will help you attain the perfect look. You will have to find out what colours and shading would be most appropriate for your particular skin tone and for your unique facial features. As you can see on TV and in magazines, makeup can do wonders to transform just about anyone.
Choosing the right products is only part of the equation. Not only do you need professional products, but you need to learn makeup application techniques that will create that perfect 'glammed up' look. The best way to learn how to apply makeup is to go to professional makeup artist. A good, experienced make up artist will be able to scrutinize your facial features and come up with the most suitable application for you in a very detailed and finished way.
If you don't want to invest in a private makeup consultation, there are other cheaper ways of learning to apply makeup properly. Go to any cosmetics section of the department store (like MAC Cosmetics at the Bay) and ask the salespeople lots of questions. Because they are interested in selling their products, they will surely give you a free demonstration as to how to apply them.
You can also get books or magazines that give lots of helpful hints on makeup application. Get a book that discusses the different techniques used for different shapes of faces and of other particular features. Is your face particularly round, long or angular? Do you have small eyes, undefined cheek bones, double chin, or unruly brows? Many books and magazines will be able to help you deal with these things.
If you're doing your makeup on your own, make sure you give attention to the following:
Fake eye lashes are a must. Learning to apply them can be frustrating at first. Be patient and practice lots, preferably before the day of the competition.
Your base. Choosing your foundation colour is a not an easy task. It's well worth careful consideration, as the better it matches your skin, the more natural it will look. Other products that you can consider are primers and concealers that could help you achieve a more smooth finish for your overall base.
Highlights are very important. You definitely want to highlight your cheekbones and perhaps your temples to give that shimmery glammed up look.
Blush can be applied in various ways. You can choose to keep it subtle or make it very striking. Either way, you want the application of blush to complement the shape of your jaw line and cheekbones.
Brows. Brows are always a tough one. Do we go for the sleek look or the more bushy Audrey Hepburn look? Either way, it's important to rid of all the stray hairs to keep a defined and shapely brow.
Eyeliner. The right application of eye liner can enhance your eyes, making them bigger, brighter and more striking. If you tend to perspire a lot while you're dancing, make sure you get a waterproof eyeliner to prevent it from running or smudging.
Eye Shadow. Make sure you choose shades that will bring out the colour in your eyes. Keep in mind the colour of your dress as well, so that the overall look is consistent.
Lips. Choose a colour that will complement your dress. Use a lip liner for a defined shape and a gloss on top of your lipstick for more of a 'wow' factor. If your lips tend to dry out over the course of a competition, use a chapstick or lip treatment before you apply your lipstick.
Bronzer and tan. Many competitors go to the tanning salons or get fake tan off of the shelf. This creates that sun-kissed look that is necessary when you're under all those bright lights with lots of exposed skin. If you are not one to tan, you should at least purchase a bronzer that can quickly be applied in certain areas to create a more competitive look.
Last look. Check your makeup under different types of lighting. If you have a three way mirror at home, make sure you examine yourself at various different angles. Remember that while you're dancing, people will be seeing you from all directions, not just from the front view.
